WELCOME TO MOUNT SEENA COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCE

Statistics is the body of scientific principles and methodologies that are used to extract useful and comprehensive information from data to draw conclusions about any phenomenon and is a discipline that studies the best ways of dealing with randomness, or more precisely and broadly, variation. The Department of Statistics is the deep interplay between application, computation and theory, as well as the backbone of data science. It renders a good combination of pure and applied statistics with software skills, enabling students to successfully participate in professional life by gaining knowledge.

•To excel by imparting profound knowledge of theoretical and practical Statistics and thus producing best Statisticians in the country.
•To continue shaping the statistical thoughts in the coming decades through extraordinary teaching and groundbreaking research.

Mission

• To familiarize students at graduate levels with the role of probabilistic as well as descriptive and inferential statistical ideas in modern science and technology.
• To provide in-depth knowledge regarding the theory and application of modern statistical techniques that are commonly used for (big) data analytics.
•To provide effective supervisory training for the basic and applied research that pushes forward the frontier of knowledge in the field of statistics and data science.

DEPARTMENT HISTORY

Department of Statistics was started in 2013. Since 2013 the faculty member handles the subsidiary paper of BSc Mathematics . During the academic year 2022-2023, the department obtained sanction from the government to start BSc Statistics.

** BSc Statistics will commence from 2023-2024 academic year **

Today's world has seen unprecedented events. The pandemic has forced us to invent new tools and techniques to overcome and emerge successfully out of this scenario. Statistics is used in practically every field of life. From a small decision to a large scale policy, the knowledge of Statistics helps in understanding, analysing as well as taking good, solid decision, with scientific techniques and theory. The world today, driven by a surge of data, much of it which is unfiltered, needs a statistician to make sense of it. Software can help in analysis but to draw conclusions, we need statisticians. The Department is focused on facilitating students to understand theory as well as apply it to real life situations.

There are more than 100 books in the library which are helpful for the BSc complementary course as well as various disciplines like BBA, BCom,MCom.
Department is also providing statistical guidance for Research scholars. Also doing Data analysis of various projects.

LIST OF ACTIVITIES

Every year department is celebrating National Statistics Day on 29th June in memory of P.C. Mahalanobis , father of Statistics. Various programs are conducted among students to promote the subject.
